Meet Angie Dudley, also known as Bakerella. She is the ofﬁcial trend setter of Cake Pops. You have probably seen her inside just about every popular homemaker or baking magazine, or perhaps you’ve seen her on the Martha Stewart Show. Bakerella is everywhere, including the random conversations I have at the grocery store. She is one of the most popular Dessert Crafters in the scene. One of her biggest fans is Blake Lively. Blake invited Bakerella and her mother to her apartment in New York City for a girlʼs night in. Can you guess their theme? A Cake Pop Party, of course! Bakerella will forever be apart of birthday parties and special events to come. To my surprise, there still is not a National Cake Pops Day yet; but I predict a date will be set soon.
Last Friday, I went to Chronicle Books Headquarters in San Francisco to interview the ever-so talented, Angie Dudley, also known as and her alter-ego Bakerella. Chronicle Books produces some of the hippest and most respected recipe books on the market. I was just thrilled to be surrounded with so much talented energy within one building.
Angie and I chatted over freshly baked cookies from Miette Bakery. She told me her favorite blogs, her experience on the Martha Stewart show, a possible upcoming book, and her favorite desserts, among other exciting upcoming news. For those who have not met Angie, she is one of the kindest people I have ever had the privilege of meeting. I had so much fun talking to her, and I really did not want it to end. I also had to the opportunity to meet her sweet mom. Now I know where she gets it from.
How old were you when you became an avid baker?
(Laughs) I was in my thirties. I’d have to do the math, 35… 36. I started the blog at the end of 2007. I really started baking after I took a cake decorating class. As a kid I would bake little stuff but nothing like what I’ve been playing around with now.
Which were some of the ﬁrst dessert blogs you read?
The ﬁrst blog that really got me excited was Cupcakes Take The Cake. I couldn’t understand all the people taking pictures of cupcakes. It was kind of bizarre to me. Iʼd heard of the world of blogs and knew what it was, but i I didn’t know the extent of all these people making food or blogging about whatever. So when I saw all these overﬂowing pictures of cupcakes on Cupcakes Take The Cake, I was mesmerized. Some other blogs I ﬁrst read were Cake Spy, and Bake Or Break.
How did you come up with the idea of making Cake Pops?
At ﬁrst I made chocolate cake balls, but that concept has been out there for a while. I wanted to make the cake balls a color and put them on a stick to look like a lollipop. I thought that would be cute just to submit pictures to Cupcake Takes The Cake so that I could have my pictures on their website. That was the the behind-the-scenes motivation. I ﬁnally found the pink candy and made it into a lollipop, and then I turned it into a cupcake. After Cupcake Takes the Cake put the photos up on their website, they said it was the cutest thing they had ever seen. That picture just went everywhere and here I am.
Like the Pringles slogan, “Once you pop, you can’t stop,” what inspired you to continue making different variations of cake pops?
It was partly the response from the readers and people just going crazy-excited. Readers of my blog and Cupcake Takes The Cake wanted to know more about Cake Pops and how to make them. Shortly after that, I was on the Martha Stewart show. I left the studio and I immediately had a ﬂood of emails from being on the show. I thought, “Gosh I’ve got to put up the “how to” so people know how to make these.” When I returned home, I put up a “How To.” Every day there were different questions about something… So, then I was slowly just teaching myself. The next thing was drawing on the cake pops. For Halloween in 2008, I made the ﬁrst set of Cake Pop characters. They were generic Halloween characters. After I made those I really saw the possibilities. Every once in awhile, when a new holiday came up, I would say, “Okay, itʼs time to make turkeys,” or I would just try something else. I would also try new ways to decorate them, like gluing things underneath before I dipped them, like the Hello Kitty Cake Pops. At the end of 2008, I decided to make the basics; from a lion to hearts, just to see if I could successfully make them. I made all of these Cake Pops and I saved them. One day, Chronicle Books called and asked, “Do you want to do a book?” At ﬁrst, I didn’t want to go with a publisher because I just wanted to do it myself. But then I thought, “Well, I am never going to do it on my own.” Plus, I wanted it to be in bookstores too. I already had 90% of the content done. I only had to write the book, ﬁx the photos up, and crop them. This has been kind of a haul and a crazy adventure.
How was it being on the Martha Stewart Show?
When I ﬁrst started my blog, I didn’t tell anyone about it. My friends, family and job had no idea about it until I told them, “I have to go on TV in 2 weeks because I have this blog…” I just had to do it. Otherwise, I would look back forever and say, “Oh my gosh, I should of gone.” Martha Stewart’s producers contacted me to come on the show for Cupcake Week. They were like, “We want you to come on the show and demonstrate how to make Cake Pops. Have you ever made these before?” I was like, “yeah…” But I only had made them once so I was panicking because I thought they would fall off the stick on TV if I didn’t work out all the bugs. I practiced making the Cake Pops quite a bit, but I was the most nervous ever. Fifteen minutes before the show, they told me I would be opening for Emeril Lagasse. Even though the Martha Stewart show is not aired live, they shoot live and do not do mess ups. It was so much pressure but it was an amazing experience.
How often do you make Cake Pops?
I don’t make Cake Pops all the time, but if I get an idea, I’ll do it. I kind of know the ones I can do, so I don’t do them. I want to do the ones I am not sure I can actually pull off. Those are the ones I get kind of excited about.
What is your favorite dessert to make?
I would probably say the Cake Pops. It’s not even because I eat them, but it’s just that I know when I make them for somebody, they’re so admirable.
What is your all time favorite dessert to make besides Cake Pops?
My all time favorite dessert… gosh that is really hard. I like so many. I like simple stuff… I like pecan pie, brownies, cookies, chocolate, and red velvet cake.
What are some of your current favorite blogs?
It’s a range of things. I like party blogs, baking blogs, and cooking blogs. I like Pioneer Woman, Picky Palate, Tartlette, Joy The Baker, Amy Atlas… Smitten Kitchen is a good blog because she does food and baking. I need to have a little bookmark list in my brain.
Any plans for another Cake Pops Book?
I think I’d like to do another Cake Pops book. When I agreed to do my ﬁrst Cake Pops book, the projects were almost ﬁnished. I know how much work and how hard it is to write a book. It took over a year to make; over the whole process of working with editors, looking at the book and sending it back and forth. When Chronicle Books came to me, they said the book will be out in a year and a half. I was like, “huh?! But I’m done!” It’s a whole process. They have to have it ﬁnished 6 months before it comes out so they can market it to buyers before hand, and print it. I would like to do another book. Even if I don’t do another book on Cake Pops, maybe I’d like to do a book on something else.
Any other upcoming exciting news?
There is a Cake Pops Kit coming out this November. I also just released a Cake Pops Note Cards set which is for sale now. I also have ﬁve new Cake Pops coming out in November. You will know when you see ﬁve in one post. I still have to ﬁnish writing the post and editing the photos. There is other stuff but it’s too soon for me to say. I usually don’t post things until I am absolutely sure they will happen.
