Imagine planning your wedding and visiting a local scrapbook store on a regular basis to purchase materials to create the perfect wedding invitations… and receiving an opportunity to purchase the scrapbook store. That is exactly how Jessica and Rashell of Invitations Ink met and began the journey of their own invitation business. Let us introduce you to Invitations Ink. Invitations Ink is a Sacramento based company offering custom invitations, announcements, and personalized stationery, among other things. In this interview we found out all about their inspirations and aspirations, as well as some of their favorite websites and current trends. Find out what they like to craft with, what gets them through their late work nights, and their own favorite collections.
How did Invitations Ink begin?
Jessica @ Invitations Ink: Rashell and I met while I was planning my wedding back in 2006. She owned a scrapbook store where I was purchasing supplies for some of the DIY aspects. I became a regular customer and about a year later she was looking to sell her store. In one of those weird coincidences, my husband and I had been talking about buying a scrapbook store, since I had recently began staying at home with our newborn daughter and our 2 older girls. Shortly after buying the store, my husband and I found out we were pregnant with kiddo #4, which had not really been part of our plan at the time. So long story short, Rashell was also ending her previous business venture as I was ending mine, and after chatting more and more about what we would be doing next, things just fell into place. Wedding invitations had always been a part of what we offered at the store, but with the economy falling apart, the hobby side of the business was dropping off while the invitation side seemed to be doing even better, so here we are – Invitations Ink!
Which Invitations Ink collection is your absolute favorite?
Jessica @ Invitations Ink: It seems as though each time we create something new and unique, it becomes our favorite! The Math Book Wedding Invitation we designed for our friends who are both math teachers is definitely something we’re extremely proud of. We just adore the charming little details of weddings, so our Library Card Guestbook and Love Notes Guestbook fall into that group. Our Evan/Stella Baby Shower collection is beyond cute and has been exceptionally popular.
Does Invitation Ink plan to expand by doing more than creating Invitations?
Jessica @ Invitations Ink: Absolutely! We just recently posted our first tutorial on the site and hope to find time to post more decorating ideas and products. We’re all about the details, so those little touches at any event can really bring the whole party together. We’ve been working with fabric, wood, and other mediums this past year to come up with designs for other types of signage and décor to offer to our clients.
What are some of your favorite websites you go to for inspiration?
Jessica @ Invitations Ink: For wedding invitations, most of the inspiration comes from the aspects of the event itself, whether it’s the couple’s personalities, theme, location, season, color scheme, etc. But for general ideas and more of the finishing details, I’d say we spend a lot of time on Pinterest.com, just seeing what people are getting excited about from fashion to home décor to craft ideas and more. Although, even something simple like a tv commercial can sometimes be that little spark of inspiration.
Name some of your latest favorite trends in the creative industry?
Jessica @ Invitations Ink: Upcycling and thrifting are definite favorites of ours right now – we love the idea of keeping things out of landfills and finding ways to reuse as well as keeping costs down. We also love seeing so many clients that are tossing aside tradition and making decisions based on what personally makes them happy. Creating an event that reflects more of someone’s personality, rather than what they saw in a magazine, really makes us happy!
What are some of your favorite materials to craft invitations with?
Jessica @ Invitations Ink: We love the shimmer card stocks for most of our styles and we have a serious addiction to glitter. But if we get the chance, we really love working with elements not typical to invitations like fabric, wood, metal – anything with texture!
Tell us a fun fact about Invitations Ink that a lot of people do not know?
Jessica @ Invitations Ink: We rely heavily on old school Whitney Houston and Paula Abdul to get us through late night work sessions! Occasionally we need some major energy and break out Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch J.
Any upcoming news about Invitations Ink that you would like to share?
Jessica @ Invitations Ink: We’re really excited to once again be helping out our friend Erik with his 20 Causes 20 Days project that focuses on helping various local charitable causes. Erik moved to Texas recently, so we’re now heading up the efforts here in Sacramento and can’t wait to see how much support and awareness we can help bring to some great causes! Plus – we’re working on quite a few products for other business professionals like our custom gift certificates and photo card templates for photographers. We’ve also been showing our etsy and wedzu shops a bit more love lately and plan to continue focusing on that area of our business!
