I love the flavor and texture my treats get from dairy products like eggs and butter, so I must admit the words vegan and dessert together can make me leery. But, I think this Coconut Tapioca Pudding with Smoked Sesame Seeds recipe from Leela Cyd Ross at The Kitchn could easily change my mind. Leela chose to use coconut milk to add “a natural richness and… a perfect floral taste” to her custard. The addition of the smoked sesame seeds adds another layer of flavor, which calls to mind exotic Pacific flavors. This treat can be served warm or cold, and I can see it as a hearty, soul-warming dessert in winter, and a refreshing, exotic dessert in the summer. Seeing words like earthiness, complexity, and velvety in this post makes me think it’s time to face my fear of vegan treats and grab a spoon!
