Recently I had the amazing opportunity to interview Lizzy from Your Cup of Cake. Your Cup of Cake is a blog devoted to all things pretty and delicious including cookies, muffins, sweet treats, and, you guessed it, cupcakes. Lizzy is equally as sweet and adorable as her treats are and offered up a tell all of Your Cup of Cake’s origins, where she sees her blog (and herself) in the future, and more. We dished about adorable cupcakes, college life, and a super big surprise coming in Spring 2013. Learn more about Lizzy, Your Cup of Cake, and some very sweet treats below.
So tell me, aside from a love of all things sweet, how did Your Cup of Cake come about?
Your Cup of Cake was sort of an accident. I was just so nervous that my computer would die on me one day, and I would lose all my recipes. I needed a place to keep them safe. So I thought I would put them online. I have always loved photography, so I posted recipes with some photos as well. Then after I got a few surges of traffic, I noticed that people all around the world were really liking my stuff.
It seems like you’re on every dessert board on Pinterest. How has Pinterest and all the new traffic changed Your Cup of Cake? (Bonus: How is Your Cup of Cake incorporating Pinterest into your brand?)
I love and appreciate all that Pinterest has done for Your Cup of Cake. If I knew where the creator of Pinterest lived, I would bake her/him some cupcakes. I get the majority of my traffic from Pinterest because things spread like wildfire on the site. I choose desserts that I think everyone would like, not just me, in order for them to get repinned on Pinterest.
I’m a huge fan of your strawberry malt cupcake (which is totally on my dessert board on Pinterest), but what is your favorite treat that you’ve featured on Your Cup of Cake?
This is the most common question I get asked (aside from “How are you not 300 pounds?”) and I never really know the answer. Obviously I have a love for cupcakes, but cookies are a weak spot for me. My top three recipes would have to be my Chocolate Lemon Cupcakes, my Chocolate Peanut Butter Rice Crispy Treats, and my Homemade Oreos.
Your Cup of Cake will be two years old in November, are you planning anything fantastic?
Fantastic? Well, I will still be in college and busy as a bee. But maybe I will need to plan a big birthday party for my site with lots of cupcakes. Any suggestions?
How do you plan to/ hope to blend your major in broadcast journalism and Your Cup of Cake?
It’s a dream to be part of the Food Network family, but I am sure millions of girls have that same dream. I would love to be able to make more tutorials, post them online, and go on TV and show people how to make perfect cupcakes. Because that has been my goal all along. I want everyone to be confident in their baking abilities.
With bloggers like Joy the Baker striking up book deals, could we expect to see a Your Cup of Cake book down the road?
I recently just signed to publish a cook book in the Spring of 2013. I am very excited because a book has always been a dream of mine, but I never thought it would happen so soon! This summer is devoted to writing and taking photos for the book, which is a large endeavor, but completely worth it.
What 3 food bloggers would you most like to share dessert with?
The talented Jamie from My Baking Addiction, the lovely Melissa of Best Friends for Frosting, and Paula Deen (I am sure she has a blog somewhere), because she is the queen of butter and she would keep us all laughing.
How do you manage school, extra curricular activities, and blogging?
It can sometimes get tough to juggle everything, but it’s completely worth it. I like to always stay ahead of my website just in case something big comes up. For example, right now I have all my posts done for the next seven weeks. That helps a lot, especially since dealing with college finals, moving, and other things in life. I will also bring treats to my professors on a weekly basis, so that helps to stay on their good side.
