Everywhere you look, it seems a new hand pie shop is opening up in some nearby neighborhood, and I, for one, am thrilled. There’s just something so wonderful about hand pies. I could eat savory for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and sweets for dessert (and also breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Hand pie shops offer their customers not only a place to eat, but also a place to soak up some nostalgia. Pie reminds customers of childhood, the Fourth of July, and the holidays. They’re perfect to eat warm when it’s cold and perfect to eat cold when it’s warm. With so many awesome attributes, we can conclude that hand pies are surely here to stay. So here’s the 411 on hand pies shops from coast to coast, with a handpicked list of some of our favorite hand pie shops around.
Pacific Pie Company is by far my favorite hand pie shop in my neck of the woods. Located in Portland, Oregon, Pacific Pie Co. boasts bold flavors, friendly service, and locally sourced products. Their slogan “Local Food, Aussie Flavor,” rings true on their menu, where ingredients such as lamb, stout, and tender, flaky crusts taste whole and natural as well as authentically Australian.
Four and Twenty Blackbirds is a hand pie/pie shop based in Brooklyn, NY. The shop boasts rave reviews on Yelp, a feature in The Brooklyn Paper, and other media outlets, as well as a wide variety of tasty flavors. The shop focuses on sweet pies ranging from the norm, Strawberry, to daring flavors like Black Bottom Oatmeal, Salty Honey and Strawberry Balsamic. It’s the perfect spot in Brooklyn to gobble up some sweet treats and a strong cup of coffee.
The Cutie Pie Wagon is a locally owned, Austin, Texas based food cart specializing in all sorts of delicious pies. They’ve been featured in “Martha Stewart Living” and “Southern Living.” It is more than apparent that Jaynie, the cart’s owner, knows a thing or two about good pies. I suggest the coconut cream or their famous buttermilk pie for first timers. Can’t find the cart? Not to worry. Cutie Pie has opened up a new permanent location in Austin as well.
I Heart Pies , located in sunny Los Angeles, holds a perfect 5 star rating on Yelp and several other food review sites. With flavors like Braised Lamb, Pecan Chocolate Bourbon, and Free-Range Chicken Pot Pie, it’s easy to see why they’re the number one pie spot in LA. As a bonus, if you get the chance to stop by, I Heart Pies gives out free samples. You’re welcome.
