Before Photos + Inspiration of our Midcentury Modern Home

In the spirit of DIY, I couldn’t wait to share these “before” photos of our new house with you! =) I am sure it’s not what many of you were expecting, but I hope the outcome of this home will inspire so many of you! It’s sometimes common for people to look for a home that is turn-key ready, but that was NOT what Andy and I wanted. ;) We were specifically looking for a Mid Century Modern Home that was untouched in its original condition so that we could keep the originality of the home while adding our own updates. Nothing is worse than finding a home with “updates” that don’t match the integrity of the home, and on top of that, you have to pay more for updates that you would want to remove anyways…So, we’re rather tickled pink (or should I say split pea soup carpet green) to get going! ;)

A little bit about the house – It’s nearly 1900 square feet, 4 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms. It was designed by Sacramento architect Carter Sparks and built by the Streng Brothers. We fell in love with modern architecture years ago and are happy to finally own a modern home. We love the style’s minimal use of materials, its indoor/outdoor aesthetic, floor to ceiling glass, post and beam construction, and clean lines. I shared some FAQs and more in our home buying announcement post. Andy has already started the home renovations, and I can’t wait to share more on that soon! Trust me, these photos might scare you now, but I promise it will be well worth the wait! More to come soon, but in the meantime hang tight with these before photos and inspiration photos…

The home was built in 1965, and we bought it directly from the family trust of the original owners.

Pictured above is a shot of our realtor and I looking at the backyard after we were invited to come back once our offer was officially accepted. We had another 40 days to go before the home was officially ours – it was hard to contain our excitement. The glass wall is by far one of my favorite features of the home. Pictured above is a quick snap of the living room wall with original shelves.

These original white tulip chairs were left with the home. Absolutely timeless!

We’re planning to install Corian in the kitchen, making it flow evenly from the backsplash to the sink. The fabricator is scheduled to come over at the end of next week.

I can hardly wait to make over these bathrooms! 22 more weeks until Christmas, and I’m dreaming of a white bathroom! ;) More inspiration on this below.

Andy and I had a REALLY hard time tearing out these yellowish carpets!!! Late April Fool’s! ;) I finally know what 1965 smells like!

The backyard features a deck, and the home is surrounded by an aggregate concrete patio. I foresee entertaining a lot back here in the near future. There is a huge oak tree in the backyard that will need to be trimmed. You can see the branches literally draping over in the right corner of the photo.

I know we have a long road ahead. Finding a middle ground with Andy on the design will be a project or maybe even a job within itself. ;) But, I’ve gathered some quick sneak peeks of my favorite inspiration. I have been really into a “boho-modern” vibe these days. But, I must give you full disclosure that some of these images look ultra-girly. Being realistic, our home will feel more gender neutral with subtle pops of pastels. ;) I included those photos as they are well executed, they make me happy, and they inspire our future home design to some caliber. I am so excited to be on this road together!

I love this Spanish Modern Patio via Design Love Fest, which was designed by my favorite interior designer, Sarah Sherman Samuel. Fun fact: Sarah is currently designing Mandy Moore’s Mid Century Modern Home.

This pure white bathroom by Emily Henderson with pleasantly unexpected pops of blue is perfection!

We plan to go with VCT tile flooring. I used to strongly dislike brown furniture, but now that we will have white floors, I am very excited to explore new colors I wouldn’t usually be attracted to. This Boho Modern Living Room inspired by Karla Quiz is perfection in so many ways.

We have 4 of these wire chairs, and I scrunched my face up when Andy brought them home. Now that I’ve seen them in a setting that is more in my comfort zone, I love the idea of surrounding them around a wood grain table. Love this Boho Chic Modern Dining Room inspired by Karla Quiz.

I don’t know what I love more – how the clothes and accessories add pops of color to the room or the idea in general. This organized pink nursery closet from Monika Hibbs adds so much style to the nursery space.

This White / Marble / Gold bathroom from Monika Hibbs is stunning. I also love the idea of incorporating a patterned wallpaper into the bathroom.

I love the white flooring, pops of green from cacti, and gold spread throughout A Beautiful Mess‘ entry way. Believe it or not, the wallpaper and door would feel more on brand with BFFF versus my home space. But there are so many other aspects of this space that make it a dream!

Love the VCT flooring in Kelly Golightly‘s dressing room! No wonder Trina Turk hosted her fashion show at this Palm Springs home.
