If you’re anything like us, you started winter with the best of intentions: get up early (yes, even when it’s dark!), exercise regularly, and eat well. But as the temperature dropped, the days got shorter, and your bed was just too warm to get out of, cardio was replaced with carbs and Netflix.

So whether you’re feeling bloated, sluggish, or like everything is just our of whack, our nutrition guru Tara Makras from Diet Ditcher is here to show us how to get our health into check and up our wellness game. Read on for five fantastic pick-me-up recipes!

Five au natural smoothie recipes that are just the right prescription for everyday complaints in your life. Because having a healthy beverage boost is the perfect way to ease through life’s little annoyances. Best part is – all you need is a blender.

Fatigue Fighter

You’re exhausted, have low energy, and just feel all round fatigued.

ingredients

In this order:

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup spinach
  • ½ cup almond milk or water
  • 1 tbs chia seeds
  • 2 tsp matcha powder
  • juice of ½ lemon juice

Why it works

  • Spinach is a nutrient dense powerhouse and one of the more iron rich foods. Plus, it’s a great source of magnesium, potassium and B – vitamins.
  • Citrus fruits are packed with vitamin C to support your body’s immune system and adrenal system, which helps prevent fatigue from physical or emotional stress. Now that’s something I can swallow.
  • Chia seeds are loaded with protein and fiber to keep your blood sugar levels stable.
  • Matcha tea is la la loaded with antioxidants and naturally occurring amino acids and is definitely your ally when fighting fatigue. While it does have some caffeine, it is known to provide a calming alertness as opposed to the coffee jitters.

Can you say cha-cha-ching – energy!

Bloat Buster

Last night’s pizza or Italian dinner has you feeling like you swallowed an air hose – you’re bloated!

ingredients

In this order:

  • 2 celery stalks
  • ½ cup frozen pineapple
  • 1 inch piece of fresh ginger
  • 1/8 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup almond milk or coconut milk

Why it works

  • Celery is a serious anti-inflammatory food and known as a natural diuretic.
  • Pineapple contains Bromelinean, an enzyme that helps aid in digestion.
  • Ginger, one of the oldest spices in the world is well known for its ability to alleviate gastro symptoms.

So drink up buttercup and de-bloat.

Hangry Helper

It’s 3:00 PM and you’re starting feel hangry (hungry + angry) but it’s way too soon for dinner.

ingredients

In this order:

  • 1/2 cup of frozen mixed berries
  • 1/2 avocado
  • ½ pear
  • 1 tbs chia seeds
  • ½ cup – 1 cup of almond milk depending on desired consistency
  • 1 tbs hemp hearts (sprinkle on top)

Why it works

  • Berries are one of the lowest glycemic fruits, so they don’t have a strong negative effect on your blood sugar levels. They are also packed full of antioxidants and fiber.
  • Chia seeds as we know are loaded with omegas and protein
  • Hemp hearts also happen to be tiny protein powerhouses
  • Avocados and pears are also surprisingly chock full of fiber.

After you chug this one you’ll be feeling full and ready to be a #bossbabe like nobody’s business.

STRESSSTOPPER_1

Stress Stopper

Work has you stressed out like whoa and you’ve got a deadline that’s not going away any time soon.

ingredients

In this order:

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup of swiss chard or any greens
  • ½ cup almond milk or water
  • 3 fresh peppermint leaves

Why it works:

  • When it comes to stress and anxiety mint leaves are your BFF. The menthol that’s naturally in peppermint helps to relax your muscles.
  • The tryptophan contained in bananas results in an increase in your body’s magnesium level, which aids in reducing anxiety.

So Zen out and drink up! No chill pills necessary.

The Works

Is digestion your issue? Yes, I said it!

ingredients

In this order:

  • 1 cucumber
  • 3 stalks of Celery
  • 1 green apple
  • 1 inch of fresh Ginger
  • 1 cup of water
  • Juice of one lemon

Why it works:

  • Ginger (again because it’s that good).
  • Green apple is a low glycemic fruit high in enzymes and fiber, which we love for the digestive process.
  • Celery and cucumbers are loaded with water! And fluid keeps the flow if you know what I mean.

So go with the flow and sip on this!

      Yes! I’ve recently got back into this whole smoothie thing again and these recipes are definitely being added to my list (Especially the Hangry Helper, maybe it’ll stop me heading to the biscuit cupboard)
