For the Get It Girls who work from home, it can be fun and flexible, but it can also be challenging and require A LOT of discipline! Working from home can be a dream; you can spend the day working from bed, get some household chores done on “breaks” and even walk the dog, all while getting your work done from the comfort of your own home. While working from home is definitely a luxury, it also has its cons. It’s easy to get distracted at home and often times, before you know it, it’s 4:00 PM and you are still in your PJs, haven’t brushed your teeth, and “accidentally” binge watched five re-runs of Sex and The City, all without accomplishing anything off your to-do list!

Working from home is different for every Get it Girl and everyone has a different routine, but here are five tips that help me stay on track, out of my PJS and actually maintaining human contact, while working remotely.

1) Set a routine and stick to it: It’s easy to get off track at home if you don’t have a schedule or routine established. Think of your work from home job as if you are required to get up and go into the office. Get up the same time every morning and establish a routine. Whether you get up, work out and eat breakfast, or decide that you want to spend the first 20 minutes checking your emails in your pajamas, whichever you decide to do, be sure to be up and dressed by 10:00 AM. Getting dressed and ready for the day gets you motivated and ready to conquer your to-dos. Getting ready for the day also makes you less inclined to jump back in bed.

2) Have real conversations: It’s so easy to get lonely, feel isolated and lose contact with the outside world when working from home. To ensure you aren’t talking to yourself all day, make small changes in your routine so that you are having real conversations with people. Pick up the phone for a quick call in lieu of an email, strike up a conversation with a local barista or even have a meeting over Skype. These little interactions make a big difference in your day and will help you maintain business relationships when working from home.

3) Get outside: Catching cabin fever is a common occurrence for those who work from home. Be sure to take breaks and set some time for yourself each day to take a quick walk outside, even if it is just around the block. You will be surprised by how a little bit of fresh air can help reset your entire day!

4) Change of scenery: If time and location permits, working from a coffee shop or a local café a few days a week can make a huge difference in your work from home morale. The buzz and energy of a local coffee shop can be motivating for getting a task done that you may be too distracted to accomplish at home. You may surprised to find that you are often inspired by the others working away on their computers and as a plus, coffee shop internet is usually quite fast.

5) Set business hours: It’s so easy to let work become your entire life when working from home. For some business owners and freelancers, it’s hard to know when to draw the line and when to stop working when you work at home. Set a specific start and stop time each day and know when to unplug and stop checking emails. Knowing when to unplug will help establish more balance in your daily routine and also help you stay more present in your life outside of work.
