A Bakery Hopping Adventure with Jessie Oleson of CakeSpy

Hello, readers! Molly here, the Editorial Assistant for Best Friends for Frosting, and the blogger behind CAKEfyi. I devote my blog to all things dessert, including recipe development and bakery reviews. So it’s no wonder that I work with Best Friends for Frosting! But, today I’m not here to put on my editing hat, today I’m here to tell you about a contest I won and an incredible experience I had.

Many of you know Jessie Oleson of CakeSpy, I’m sure.  Well, recently, I had the opportunity to spend an entire day eating cake with CakeSpy! This opportunity came about after earning first place in CakeSpy’s ‘So You Wanna be a CakeSpy’ Contest, hosted in partnership with Sasquatch books to support CakeSpy’s Cookbook!

After the call for submissions received over 300 entries, Jessie had narrowed it down to 30 finalists, and then she opened up the voting to her followers. The finalists were naturally going wild on Facebook, Twitter, and other popular sites in order to convince the world why their recipe was the best. Once Jessie had narrowed down the top five, she handed the decision making task over to a group of her trusted friends, family, and other dessert lovers.

The group of judges agreed that my recipe for Neapolitan Blondie Bars were “multi-hued, and certainly whimsical and rich and delicious in the CakeSpy tradition.”

The grand prize included a trip to spend the day with CakeSpy, traveling to various bakeries in Seattle, Washington. And we did just that. We actually went to a total of 6 sweet spots, including bakeries, cupcake shops, and even stopped for gelato!

First, we visited Nielsen’s Pastries so we could grab a potato. A sweet potato. A pastry puff filled with custard and whip cream, then topped with marzipan and cocoa powder.

We then made our way to Pinkabella Cupcakes, and to Trophy Cupcakes afterward. We sampled a few cupcakes from each spot, chatting about their taste, their texture, and overall delicious qualities. Trophy generously offered us a dozen of their incredible cupcakes to take with us when we went to visit Joy the Baker later on in the day.

Then we went to D’Ambrosio on a mission for gelato. I ate an incredible coconut gelato, which was just bursting with flavor.

After a quick pastry drive-by at West Seattle’s Bakery Nouveau, we made our way to Jessie’s CakeSpy Shop in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. We walked in as Joy had been speaking to the crowd about her life, her blog, and her incredible new Joy the Baker Cookbook. Before she sat down to sign books for the crowd, we handed off a cupcake to her, and took a few photos. After the signing, I had the opportunity to interview Joy the Baker.

Following our meeting with Joy, Jessie and I set out on one more cupcake mission. We made our way to Cupcake Royale, Seattle’s first cupcake shop where we ate cupcakes, and found a whole lot of magic.

We ended the the day by discovering Cupcake Royale’s stash of butter that had been softening on the counter. It was about 50 pounds worth. Talk about a magical end to a delicious day!
