Bookshelf Upcycle DIY Project

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of CORT Clearance. All opinions are 100% mine.

The interior design projects and home renovations have definitely been stacking up around here! Between finishing touches to our mid-century modern house, and all of the work on the So Best Friends For Frosting Airbnb, we are certainly managing to stay busy! All of the interior design ideas for the So BFFF Airbnb are starting to come to life though! Designing and brainstorming fun DIY projects is always tons of fun, but finishing those projects can be oh, so satisfying. This past week, Andy and I painted, wallpapered, and did some major upcycling to the bookshelf we got from CORT Clearance Furniture. It’s now the absolute perfect home furniture piece to brighten up this chic new space that I cannot wait to share with each and every one of you. I am amazed at how easy this home upcycle project was to execute. I’m actually trying to keep myself from stealing it for my home office instead ;)

DIY Interior Design For The So Best Friends For Frosting Airbnb

For those of you who don’t know the full story, I have been working with my parents on an interior design project over the past few months. My parents have always loved fixing up houses and have recently decided to turn a few properties into Airbnbs. They actually opened up their first Airbnb last year and this year we landed a dream partnership to turn their second property into an entire experience for our readers, neighbors, and friends! My parents have actually owned this house for forever and it’s such an incredible space! Andy and I lived in this house for about two years many years ago, so helping with the interior design plan means a lot to me. It’s also been such an incredible experience to go full on BFFF design with the space! The style of BFFF is very much me, but when it comes to the interior design of our house, Andy and I don’t always fully agree. He can only handle so much pink! ;) The majority of our arguments are usually over interior design. It’s a good thing, but a bad thing too. ;) But taking on this project has been a great way for me to bring all the BFFF style I want to life. We’ve already accomplished so much with the property and I can’t wait to share every little detail with you guys! :)

Finding The Best Furniture Pieces

CORT Furniture Clearance Center has been an absolute life-saver with all of the house interior design! If you’ve never shopped there, you should go check it out ASAP, they focus on selling tons of upscale furniture at a significantly discounted rate.  I honestly don’t know how they do it! I have managed to snag SO many great home furniture finds at an unbelievable price since we started all the renovations. It has very quickly become one of my favorite furniture stores, as their inventory is constantly changing. The store is always stocked with so many beautiful furniture options for everything from dining sets to bookshelves ;)

Upcycling a Bookshelf Into a DIY Project

Andy and I found this fantastic bookshelf on one of our first trips to CORT Furniture Clearance Center. As soon as I saw this bookshelf, I had a million different ideas for how I wanted to upcycle it. The piece is so perfect for the Airbnb, but I was dying to add a little bit of BFFF flare to it! ;) For the past few months, I had been trying to decide which design plan to go with. I was having some serious creative commitment issues! Can anyone else relate to that? This past week I finally took the design plunge and I am so, so happy with how it turned out! We painted the bookshelf white and added light pink damask wallpaper for a chic, feminine look. :)

How to DIY Paint a Bookshelf

I am a firm believer in the powers of a can of paint! A fresh coat of paint can instantly change the look and feel of a piece. Plus painting a piece of furniture takes little time and little money. Those are basically requirements when it comes to massive interior design projects like this one! While I love the look of a freshly painted piece, painting certain furniture can be a bit tricky. Our bookshelf had this amazing, dark cherry color, so I knew that painting it white would be an undertaking! After we finished sanding and priming the bookshelf, we got started with the painting. When it comes to massive DIY paint projects, I really recommend using a combination of spray paint and regular paint. The bookshelf required so many coats of paint that it was actually a must! By the end I was completely covered in white paint, but it was so worth it! The lighter color changed the entire feel of the bookshelf. I’m so obsessed with the light, airy look!

Chic Damask Wallpaper

Even with the white paint in place, I wanted to add a bit more to this bookshelf. I found this light pink damask wallpaper and knew it would be the greatest accent to the design. The wallpaper itself is actually a peel and stick kind, so this part was easy as can be! We removed all of the shelves from the bookshelf and applied the wallpaper. If you have extra wallpaper you’d love to use for a project, then absolutely go for it! But if you’re wallpaper shopping for a project like this, then self adhesive or peel and stick is seriously the best option.

It only took a few minutes for the wallpaper to adhere and dry, with basically no mess. The wallpaper accent gives the bookshelf a super personal and professional look too. Not to mention, the chic, feminine look of the bookshelf now could not be more perfect for me!

Styling The Bookshelf

When it comes to this bookshelf, I could not be more in love with the finished project! Once we were done, there was honestly a part of me that wanted to leave the bookshelf blank – just so I could look at it all day! But what’s a bookshelf without plenty of fun accessories? ;) I headed to Target for accessories to stock the shelves, and of course was not disappointed! I love mixing textures, materials, and colors with interior design projects. Fun accessories like these pineapples help show a little personality and are perfect visual additions. Plus I stocked up on copies of some of my favorite books, like the Magnolia Table cookbook, to help line the shelves. The sky is absolutely the limit on styling your bookshelf though!

Do you guys have any favorite upcycling pieces to share? Or any tips for balancing interior design projects? The bookshelf now has me totally hooked on DIY Upcycling projects like this, but I’d love to hear about any other tips or tricks you all have up your sleeve ;). Don’t forget to check out the CORT Blog for more inspiration.

Thanks so much for all of your sweet encouragement on this huge project! Next steps are painting the exterior of the home, completing the interior design of the home, and stocking the shelves plump full of accessories like pots, pans, and other kitchen essentials. So stay tuned! The So Best Friends For Frosting Airbnb launches this Summer! It will be available to use for parties, retreats, photo shoots, or just to stay and get away. I can’t wait for this experience to come to life. Wishing you all an amazing week!
