Sweet & Tangy Barbecue Sauce
Wanting to add a kick to the last of your summer grilling dishes? Katherine Hysmith of The Young Austinian is here with us today to share her recipe for a sweet and savory honey barbecue sauce. Here’s what she has to say:
As a Southerner, there are a few things I know to never discuss in polite conversation: money, politics, and barbecue. With a dozen different regional varieties, we take our low and slow smoked meats very seriously and the sauce is just as important as it is diverse. Some like it spicy, others like it smoky with molasses, and some swear by no sauce at all. Whatever your preference, barbecue sauce is easy to make at home and works perfectly with late summer grill sessions. This crowd-pleasing DIY Barbecue Sauce is quick and simple, full of spices, and just the right amount of sweetness.
DIY HONEY BARBECUE SAUCE
Makes about 1 cup
-1 tablespoon butter
-1 teaspoon mustard powder
-½ teaspoon onion powder
-½ teaspoon garlic powder
-½ teaspoon black pepper
-½ teaspoon paprika
-¼ teaspoon cumin
-¼ teaspoon coriander
-Pinch crushed red pepper
-2 tablespoons ketchup
-½ cup tomato sauce
-¼ cup distilled white vinegar
-¼ cup water
-1 teaspoon salt
-1 tablespoons brown sugar
-4 tablespoons honey
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the spices and stir until fragrant, about 20 seconds. Add the ketchup and blend with the spices, another 20 or 30 seconds.
- Add the tomato sauce, vinegar, water, salt, brown sugar, and honey to the pan, stirring to combine. Bring the mixture to a boil and then lower the heat, cooking for another 15 minutes. When the sauce is ready, it can be cooled and stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
