VEGETARIAN GRILLED PIZZA RECIPE

pillsfirst

We all know there’s nothing better than cooking over an open flame outdoors in the summertime. We’re all accustomed to grilling our favorite meats and veggies, but now it’s time to expand your horizons and try out new options. Pizza on the grill? Who would have thunk? I was introduced to this idea via a tutorial on the Pillsbury site using their Classic Pizza Crust. Who says you need an expensive pizza oven to achieve that artisan taste! With Pillsbury Classic Pizza Crust, you will be turning out delicious pizzas in just 5 minutes with a delicious, smoky, BBQ flame grilled taste.

To achieve the perfect pizza, first warm up your grill. Get it nice and hot and give it a coat of canola oil (don’t use other oils as they tend to burn at lower temperatures). Lay out a sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil and oil it up with cooking spray. Roll out the dough to your desired pizza shape (make your crust relatively thin but not too thin for best results).

Lay the dough onto the grill and peel off the foil (see photo above).  I used a gas grill for our pizza and had to play around with the settings to get the perfectly sized flame (you don’t want the flame to touch the dough, or you’ll end up with undesired burnt flavors. I used the lowest flame setting).

Every grill is different, and you know your grill the best, so use your judgement and discretion on grill settings, rack placement, etc. Grill until the bottom of the pizza is golden brown, flip it, and grill the other side for a minute or two. Remove your crust from the grill and add sauce and desired toppings. Return to the grill and cover until cheese is melted (put your grill on low for this step). Viola — you’ve got yourself a new delicious take on a family favorite!

Toppings we used:

pizza sauce

fresh mozzarella (cut into thin slices)

red onion

orange bell pepper

fresh chopped basil (add after grilling as it is a delicate herb)

green zucchini

pepper flakes
