When it comes to birthday parties, we know that the very first one can be the most exciting. The kids are excited, of course, especially if it’s their first time for cake, but the parents, family, and friends are even more thrilled to see a special little birthday girl or boy growing up. First birthdays come with plenty of planning, plenty of fun, and a whole lot of color. And that’s exactly what our Production Assistant, Jenny Jun, planned for her niece Olivia’s very first birthday party. We’re so thrilled to have Jenny sharing Olivia’s party with us today, photographed by Hannah Joy Photography, and offering up a few fun ideas for your little one’s next party! Here’s what she has to say:
Any birthday is special, but nothing is more special than a first birthday! My niece Olivia absolutely loves books, especially The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, so my sister and I decided to bring her favorite book to life for her first birthday party. With so many fun colors and patterns, we couldn’t have been more thrilled with the outcome!
We knew we wanted to make it colorful and bright, just like Olivia, so we hopped on Pinterest right away to get some inspiration! We saw some great ideas and decided to make a lot of the decor by ourselves. My sister and I had so much fun putting together all of the fun little details.
We sent out an invitation to all of our friends and family members, knowing that they would want to join in the celebration! We absolutely loved these Big One Children’s Party Invitations from Minted. We were able to choose from three different colors, adding a big splash to everyone’s mailbox!
We set to work, making a streamer backdrop, which was such a fun colorful addition to the dessert table. We stuck with the Very Hungry Caterpillar theme by adding colorful polka dots to all the decor!
We added a colorful 3D fondant caterpillar on top of the cake to add a bold statement to our dessert table. To showcase Olivia turning one, we included cookies with her name written on them, using an apple shaped cookie cutter to accent the Very Hungry Caterpillar theme.
We included a chalk board that featured a list of moments focused on Olivia! We included her first words, her favorite foods, how tall she is now, and more. Adding in all of these little details really celebrated Olivia turning one and made for a great DIY addition to the whole party!
We wrapped up the party with a fun little gift for our guests, thanking them for attending on these perfect polka dot gift tags.
First birthdays are so much fun to plan and using the Very Hungry Caterpillar for our inspiration made it even more fun! What children’s book will you bring to life for your next party?
