This American Flag Caprese Board is one of those easy 4th of July appetizers that looks SO cute on the table but only takes a few minutes to put together. Fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, blueberries, and basil come together in a fun patriotic design that’s perfect for Memorial Day, 4th of July, and summer BBQs.

I just love it when I make a recipe that tripples as easy, cute, and delicious!

And this American Flag Caprese Board checks off every single one of those boxes.
Oh my goodness, I LOVE this recipe so much.
I’ve always been a huge fan of Italian recipes, especially fresh caprese salad. My grandfather was born in Italy, so maybe delicious tomato, mozzarella, and basil recipes were already part of my flavor palette when I was born…
It’s one of those 4th of July recipes you can bring out all summer long.
I love how it looks like an American flag and it looks so festive and impressive… but it’s actually incredibly simple to put together. Talk about holiday magic!
The combination of juicy tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, blueberries, and fresh basil is SO good together.
And turning it into an American flag makes it feel extra fun and special for summer celebrations…

SO easy to assemble
And one you quickly assemble all those fresh ingredients all on top of a toasted crostini, drizzled with balsamic dressing with a little kosher salt & black pepper… it is NEXT level! It tastes like summer in the best way possible.
Done is Better than Perfect
One small thing I’ve learned from lots of experience in the kitchen: don’t stress about making it perfect. The first time I tried making this appetizer, I overthought the rows way too much, and it actually looked better when I didn’t get caught up in perfection and just let it come together naturally.
Alrighty besties… If you’re looking for easy patriotic summer recipes that everyone will talk about, this American Flag Caprese board is such a fun one to make!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

- Looks fancy, but it’s super simple
- It’s just fresh, easy ingredients, but the end result looks like you planned it way ahead.

How to Make an American Flag Food Board

Step 1: Slice Everything First
I like to prep all the tomatoes and mozzarella before I start assembling. The first time I didn’t do this and ended up juggling slicing while building the flag—it got messy fast.
Step 2: Make the Blueberry Corner
In the top left corner of your board, create a square of blueberries. This is the “stars” section of your American flag food design.
Step 3: Build the Red and White Rows
Add a row of overlapping tomato slices across the top, then a row of mozzarella underneath. Keep alternating until the board is filled.
Step 4: Add the Mozzarella Stars
Use a small star cookie cutter to cut stars from leftover mozzarella slices. Place them over the blueberries.
Step 5: Serve Right Away
Serve with toasted crostini, basil, and balsamic vinaigrette on the side so everyone can build their own bites.

What to Serve with This Patriotic Appetizer
This appetizer pairs so well with barbecue food! It pairs great with:
- Grilled burgers
- BBQ chicken
- Pasta salad
- Corn on the cob
- Watermelon slices
- Lemonade or iced tea
It also works really well with other 4th of July appetizers when you’re building a bigger party spread.
Tips for the Best Caprese Board
- Don’t aim for perfect rows. Slightly uneven layers actually make it look more natural and fun.
- Pre-sliced mozzarella logs are a huge shortcut and make everything come together so much faster.
- Add basil right before serving so it stays fresh and bright.
- Keep balsamic dressing on the side, especially if you want the board to stay neat longer.
- If you’re serving your meal outside, chill everything first to keep it extra fresh.
Storage Tips for Caprese Ingredients
If you “somehow” have leftovers (this rarely happens in my house), store your caprese leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
Just make sure NOT to assemble or store your leftovers in the same container as your crostini as it will become soggy.
Just a heads up, I’ve noticed the tomatoes will release a bit of juice overnight, so I usually drain and pat them dry with a paper towel before serving again.

Frequently Asked Questions
I got my star cookie cutter from Amazon. I have used it for so many fun 4th of July recipes. If you love making fun food ideas and still sitting on getting one… just do it! ;)
Yes! I like prepping everything a few hours early, then assembling it right before serving so it still looks fresh and pretty.
Pre-sliced mozzarella logs make this so much easier and keep the layers neat.
Definitely! It’s one of those Memorial Day recipes I end up repeating every year because it works for all summer gatherings.
You can always skip the stars or cut them freehand… but the cookie cutter makes it extra cute and fun.

American Flag Caprese Board

Equipment
- rectangular plate or cutting board we used a 12"x16" plate
Ingredients
- Two 16 oz BelGioioso Fresh Mozzarella Logs, Pre-Sliced
- 6 tomatoes, sliced
- 1 pint blueberries
For serving
- toasted crostini
- balsamic vinegarette dressing
- fresh basil
- kosher salt
- fresh ground black pepper
Instructions
- Slice tomatoes
- On a rectangular plate or cutting board start by creating a square in the left corner out of blueberries.
- To the left of the blueberry square, create a row of sliced tomatoes on the top of the plate, overlapping each slice by about half to three-quarters of the way as you go.
- Below the tomatoes, layer pre-sliced mozzarella the same way to create a horizontal line. Alternating the cheese and tomatoes, create one line of each to finish the flag.
- Using a small star cookie cutter, cut out about 6–7 stars from the leftover slices of mozzarella, then place the stars on top of the blueberries.
- Serve with toasted crostini, balsamic dressing, and fresh basil.
- To make crostini, layer a few slices of tomatoes sprinkled with kosher salt and pepper, mozzarella, a spoonful of balsamic dressing, and fresh basil.
