My Daughter’s Class Went Wild
These Easter Dirt Cups bring back great childhood memories of making fun treats for holiday parties in elementary school. As I type this, I can almost hear that nostalgic TikTok tune, “Aquatic Ambience,” playing in my head!
This easter dessert was even a total winner at my daughter Claire’s first-grade classroom party! The kids had SO MUCH FUN making this easy dessert!
We set up a dirt cup topping bar and all the kids had an absolute blast creating their own Easter Dirt Pudding Cups with all sorts of colorful toppings.
My Ultimate Dessert Hack Shortcut
The secret to this incredibly easy easter dessert? Pre-made pudding cups! Just peel off the lids and let the topping fun begin. Of course, if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, adding homemade chocolate pudding to clear plastic cups is another great option too.
If It’s in My Cookbook, You Know It’s Easy
When I was coming up with 100 easy recipes for my new cookbook, Celebrating Every Day, these Easter Dirt Pudding Cups were a definite yes, right alongside their spooky cousin, the graveyard pudding cups!
If you’re looking for a similar easter dessert to feed a large crowd, my Easter Dirt Cake is similar as it’s made with some of the same ingredients. I am even bringing it to our family Easter party this year! It’s that DELICIOUS!
And because every bunny loves carrots, these Bunny Dirt Cups will pair beautifully with my Carrot Patch Dirt Cups! You just add crushed Oreos for the dirt and dip strawberries in orange candy melts for the carrots! Wait until you see how those strawberry stems replicate an actual carrot— it’s wild!
Ingredients for Easter Dirt Pudding Cups:
You only need five simple ingredients to assemble these quick and easy Peeps dessert dirt cups. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Chocolate pudding cups: Use any flavor you love! I think chocolate tastes best and gives that classic rich brown “dirt” look.
- Peeps Bunnies: Get creative with your Peeps! Any color of bunny will work, or even try mixing in some chick Peeps for fun. Go for a single color or a vibrant mix – it’s up to you!
- Green shredded coconut & green food coloring: Make your own edible “grass” by adding a cup of shredded coconut to a zip-top bag with several drops of green food coloring. Seal your ziplock bag and shake until evenly colored.
- Easter candy eggs: A few small Easter candy eggs are the perfect finishing touch. I find that two per cup is just the right amount.
How to Make Dirt Cups
Follow these super simple steps… Peel, Top, Enjoy! Okay, in all seriousness, let’s break it down for how to make dirt cups!
- Start with your chocolate pudding cups and carefully remove the lids.
- Gently press a bunny Peep into the center of the pudding, making sure some pudding comes up around the sides to hold it in place.
- Sprinkle the green shredded coconut generously around the Peep, creating a fun “grassy” scene. The shredded coconut will also anchor the Peeps bunny so it does not fall over.
- Finally, add a few colorful Easter candy eggs to complete your adorable Easter Dirt Pudding Cups!
To keep your Peeps soft and your coconut “grass” fresh and slightly crisp, it’s best to assemble these dirt cups no more than 2 hours before serving.
Skip the freezer for these pudding cups! Freezing will change the texture of the pudding.
Tips & Variations to Try
- Create a Dirt Cup Bar: Set out pudding cups (lids off), bowls of green coconut “grass,” and Easter candy eggs, and let everyone decorate their dirt cup. Pre-filling the pudding cups with “grass” can make it even easier and less messy. We did this in Claire’s first-grade classroom. It was SO fun!
- Get Creative with Toppings: While Peeps are a classic, feel free to get creative! Small chocolate bunnies (white, milk, or dark) are great alternatives. You can also add jelly beans, colorful sprinkles, or even small orange candies to look like tiny carrots. Or you can even check the baking aisle at the grocery store. I’ve seen some super cute edible Easter cupcake toppers like carrots and bunnies.
- Change Your Dirt Patch: For a different look and texture, try using crushed chocolate sandwich cookies (like Oreos) instead of coconut for a more traditional “dirt” effect. This is also the classic way to make Oreo dirt cups.
Storage & Transporting Easter Dirt Cups
Once assembled, keep these Easter Dirt Pudding Cups in the refrigerator. They are best enjoyed within a couple of hours of assembly due to the toppings. When transporting, try to keep the dirt cups upright in a container to prevent any spills or damage to your adorable creations. You will likely have to reposition your Peeps bunnies, but it can easily be done.
