How Long Christmas Crack Takes to Make

You only need to prep for about 10 minutes to make this Christmas crack candy. Just make sure to have all your ingredients pre-measured and ready to rock! It comes together fast, so stay close to the stovetop.

A plate of chocolate toffee bars topped with red, green, and white sprinkles sits on a wooden board, with a bowl of matching sprinkles and pine branches nearby, creating a festive holiday scene.

Tips for Making Christmas Crack:

• When you place the saltine crackers in a single layer, make sure they touch.

• When pouring the toffee mixture over the crackers, use a spatula to spread it evenly.

• If your chocolate chips don’t fully melt, pop the pan back in the oven for 30 seconds. Just be careful not to overheat them, or the chocolate can seize.

• Once set, break the candy apart with your hands or cut it into pieces with a knife.

Topping Ideas for Christmas Crack

• Crushed peppermint candy canes
• Holiday sprinkles
• Mini M&Ms
• Chopped nuts
• White chocolate drizzle

Easy Variations for Saltine Crackers

Instead of using the traditional saltine crackers, you can also use graham crackers, Ritz crackers, pretzels, Chex Mix, or even Club crackers.

Every time I post this Christmas Crack recipe on our Facebook page, I get comments saying how good it is with graham crackers. I seriously need to try it that way too!

Storing Leftover Christmas Crack

Christmas Crack is one of the best make-ahead holiday treats because it stores well and is even a great treat to have on hand.

It’s a Best Friends for Frosting follower and family favorite Christmas recipe for a reason! It stands up to all the well-deserved hype!

On the Counter: Store pieces of Christmas Crack in an airtight container or zip-lock bag for 3 to 4 days at room temperature.

In the Refrigerator: Store Christmas Crack in an airtight container in the fridge, and it will stay fresh and crunchy for about 10 days.

In the Freezer: Christmas Crack freezes well in an airtight container for about 2 months. I have done this multiple times. Just make sure to layer parchment paper between pieces so they do not all stick together.

It’s the Most Addictive Holiday Treat

Whether you call it Christmas Crack, Christmas Cracker Candy, or cracker toffee, it really is one of the easiest, most addictive Christmas recipes out there. Kind of like the old Pringles jingle… “Once you pop, you can’t stop!” Plus, Christmas Crack is traditionally made with “crackers”! Get it?! Christmas CRACK-ERS!” ;)

It is quick, delicious, and always gets rave reviews from my followers on social media. Everyone just LOVES it!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2-2 sleeves of saltine crackers
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • one 11.5 oz package chocolate chips
  • Christmas sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350F.
  • Add saltine crackers into a single layer on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Make sure they are touching each other.
We used about 1 1/2 sleeves of saltine crackers (48 crackers), six rows wide and eight rows long.
A baking tray lined with parchment paper holds an even grid of saltine crackers. The crackers are golden-brown with a dotted pattern. Small bowls with ingredients are partially visible at the edges.
  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter, then add the brown sugar.
Stirring consistently, bring the mixture to a soft boil until the mixture starts to bubble and thicken, about 5 minutes.
A metal pot containing melting butter and brown sugar. The butter is partially melted and pooling around the sugar, creating a mixture of golden liquid and soft, brown chunks ready for blending.
  • Distribute the mixture evenly over the crackers, then spread it with a spatula.
A baking tray topped with a layer of saltine crackers spread with a caramel-like sauce. Small bowls with chocolate chips and festive sprinkles are visible on the left side. Some unspread crackers are on the right.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle with all of the chocolate chips. Let the chocolate chips sit for a few minutes until melty, and then evenly spread them into a thin layer.
If the chocolate chips are still not melted, please make sure to place them in the oven for an additional 30 seconds to soften.
Be careful not to overheat the chocolate chips, as they will seize up and harden, making them impossible to spread.

  • Evenly sprinkle with your favorite Christmas sprinkles.
A large baked rectangular pastry topped with a smooth layer of chocolate and scattered red, white, and green sprinkles. Its placed on a metal baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  • Cool for a few hours to overnight in the fridge.
Peel off the parchment paper from the back of the Christmas crack and break apart with your hands or cut with a knife.
I prefer to keep the Christmas Crack refrigerated before serving, but this is totally optional.
Triangular chocolate pieces with colorful sprinkles are spread out on a light surface. The sprinkles are red, white, and green, adding a festive touch to the treats.

Notes

• When you place the saltine crackers in a single layer, make sure they touch.
• When pouring the toffee mixture over the crackers, use a spatula to spread it evenly.
• If your chocolate chips don’t fully melt, pop the pan back in the oven for 30 seconds. Just be careful not to overheat them, or the chocolate can seize.
• Once set, break the candy apart with your hands or cut it into pieces with a knife.
